Memphis Symphony Orchestra
2009-10 Season:
A Season to Inspire, Renew, Uplift
The Memphis Symphony Orchestra presents a four concert series for your musical enjoyment: the all-new “Grand Series” and “Sundays with the Symphony Series” both sponsored by First Tennessee; “MSO Pops Series”, and “Fridays on the Town Series” sponsored by Paul and Linnea Bert. Patrons attending all series will be actively solicited for input into the selection of MSO’s next music director, around which the new season programming has been planned.
The 2009-2010 season will explore a range of classical music repertoire, from masterpieces by the world’s greatest composers to the rich array of chamber music to the symphonic music scores written for opera and great films.
Whether it is spending an evening with Bach at Idlewild, enjoying an opera performance at Clark Opera Memphis Center, listening to orchestral film music or spending an evening with mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, MSO’s new season is replete with programming that will attract all segments of the symphonic music audience.
Guest artists
Among the acclaimed guest artists performing with the MSO at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts are Memphis filmmaker Craig Brewer, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, cellist Julie Albers, violinist Karen Gomyo, pianist Kirill Gerstein and vocalist Terry Mike Jeffrey.
Next music director
Most of the excitement surrounding MSO’s 2009-2010 season focuses on the selection of the orchestra’s new music director. Organization officials announced recently that Mei-Ann Chen, assistant conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; Thomas Wilkins, music director of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, and Alastair Willis, former associate conductor of the Seattle Symphony, are three candidates for the orchestra’s music director position.
