HOLST The Planets
Mei-Ann Chen will take the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and its audience across our solar system with Holst’s The Planets. From our seats here on Earth, each of the seven additional planets (remember, Pluto is no longer a planet) is given a remarkable orchestral personality. Mars, the Bringer of War; Venus, the Bringer of Peace; Mercury, the Winged Messenger; Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity; Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age; Uranus, the Magician; and Neptune, the Mystic.
Fun Fact: Holst’s inspiration for The Planets actually has much more to do with astrology than astronomy, and sadly leaves out a characterization of Pluto. Since Pluto’s downgrade from planetary status in 2006, this will be the first Memphis performance of The Planets to encompass the complete solar system!
This concert is free to the public. Please consider donating to the Memphis Symphony.
This concert is part of the year-long residency of the MSO to support the Memphis Music Magnet in Soulsville. The MSO / Community LIFT received a highly coveted grant from ArtPlace, a national initiative that invests in community revitalization through the arts. Grant funds will be used to improve Soulsville’s music-focused infrastructure and also fund a full season of free MSO concerts and artistic engagement in the historic neighborhood.
