A new music series the Commercial Appeal calls “a fresh, creative powerhouse,” Opus One features unconducted performances by MSO musicians in venues that embody the soul of Memphis, but are not usually associated with classical music. Audiences eat and drink, socialize, and listen to selections from the classical repertoire as well as from popular music genres ranging from swing to blues to rock and roll.
Opus One brings to fruition the dreams of MSO musicians to keep symphony performances exciting, relevant, and fulfilling for today’s audiences. Unlike traditional symphony experiences, at an Opus One concert you’re likely to hear great music from a violinist and then chat about it over a drink; to listen to a trumpet player describe his first experience attending a concert between movements of a piece; or to hear one-ofa- kind collaborations between the best instrumentalists and the best stage performers Memphis has to offer.
During the hugely successful 2009-10 season Opus One concerts, our musicians played with blues songstress Susan Marshall, presented big band music featuring Fred Astaire ballroom dancers and an open dance floor, and joined String Theory in reimagining music by Radiohead and Postal Service. Building on the success of this unprecedented and innovative model, this season’s concerts promise more exciting reimagining of what classical music for Memphis can be.
2010-11 Schedule
Handel, Hendrix and Harlan T. Bobo
November 11 and 12, 2010 • 7:30 pm
Hi-Tone Café, 1913 Poplar Avenue
The Hi-Tone Café is the heart of Memphis music, and Memphis icon Harlan T. Bobo brings a Memphis beat to the space in collaboration with the MSO. In addition to arrangements of Bobo’s own works, this program will span centuries of great popular music with an unconducted performance of Handel’s Royal Fireworks Suite and arrangements of compositions by guitar legend Jimi Hendrix.
Opera Swings at Bridges
February 3, 2011 • 7:30 pm
Bridges, 477 North Fifth Street
Is the MSO bringing the Met to the nightclub or the nightclub to the Met? At Bridges, the best loved opera arias meet the styles of jazz and swing as the MSO and the legendary Joyce Cobb join forces to reinterpret opera’s greatest hits. From orchestral interludes by Rossini and Puccini to jazzed up arias from La Boheme, Carmen, and Porgy and Bess, this evening bridges the elegant and the casual.
