Young People's Concerts (YPC)

January 25-26, 2018 | CAnnon center of the perfroming arts

The Memphis Symphony Orchestra is very excited to present the 2017-2018 Young People’s Concert at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, January 25th  and Friday, January 26th, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.  In alignment with MLK50, the concert program celebrates composers who persisted in creating their music in the face of difficult challenges. The challenges include being the “wrong” age, nationality, gender or race. It also recognizes composers who wrote the “wrong” kind of music according to their own government. Each piece is prefaced with a featured quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who epitomized social progress through nonviolent action. The program is appropriate for students in Grades 3-8, with emphasis on Grade 5.

Again, the 2017-2018 YPC has been programmed in response to the city-wide MLK50 initiative, with musical selections referencing important statements made by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Pieces include:
