These past months have had a tremendous impact on all our lives. I wanted to take this moment to share with you the current state of the orchestra and our plans for this coming year.
First, we could not be more proud of our musical community. After canceling the remainder of the 2019-2020 season, our musicians responded with creativity by creating and sharing art from their homes, and collaborated on collage performances that celebrated our partners like the University of Memphis and Opera Memphis. Our patrons donated their tickets as contributions, and our supporters continued to make philanthropic gifts. Because of this collective effort, you enabled the MSO to continue paying our musicians, while many of our fellow orchestras around the country were forced to furlow. This has only been possible because of you.
This health crisis is not yet behind us, but we intend to go into this next season with the same creativity and collaboration that has led us this far. Things will look different from what we are used to and what was planned, but we intend to perform and to create programming that is exciting, uplifting, and brings people together in a spirit of community. The safety of our musicians and our patrons will be our top priority.
In the Fall, the MSO is canceling the 2020-2021 season as planned and will schedule a series of community concerts with smaller ensembles and programming that allows for the safety of patrons and musicians. Further details will be announced later this summer.
Our intent is to program a reduced season beginning in January 2021 through the Spring. Details for this new season will be announced and go on sale in October 2020.
Many patrons still have ticket balances from 2019-2020 concerts. Others have already purchased their 2020-2021 season subscriptions or have been delaying renewing their subscriptions in anticipation of further news. As has been our practice for many years, the MSO has set aside your ticket purchases to be available for future use. In the next few weeks, each patron will receive a letter with these details.
During these times, we need the uplifting influence of music and community in our lives more than ever. While it will be difficult, we know that we will come out of this a stronger organization and musical community because of you.
