Sphinx Connect 2017

Artists Qualifying Auditons

The Memphis Symphony Orchestra was one of ten orchestras (nationally) invited to participate in the first ever Sphinx Artists Qualifying Auditions on February 9, 2017, prior to the start of the annual SphinxConnect conference that took place this past weekend.

The Sphinx organization, which has existed for 20 years to promote talented Black and Latino orchestral musicians, pre-qualified a group of 26 professional candidates representing all sections of the orchestra. Judges were appointed by each of the ten participating orchestras to assess the 26 auditions through a double blind process. Judges were also charged with providing feedback to the candidates and taking their impressions back to section leaders in their own orchestras for consideration.

Because the auditions were recorded, Memphis Symphony Orchestra musician (Heather Trussel and Charles Schulz) work was very much like a pre-screening. The only exception was for tuba player, because of Chuck's role as principal. After each audition, judges were given time to make notes which were shared with Sphinx and individual candidate.  In addition, Heather and Chuck's notes have been made available to our own principal players, as well.

After the auditions, Rhonda Causie, our Director of Innovation and Impact and an audition observer,  debriefed with the MSO musicians and made recommendations for MSO. As a next step they requested a resume and audio recording for candidates who passed the pre-screening. Resumes and recordings were to respective principals, and after review and acceptance, suitable candidates were placed on our sub list in compliance with all of our existing policies and contract language.

Overall, the experience a Sphinx Connect was an interesting and well-designed process that aligned with traditional audition practices. As an orchestra, it was an honor for us to be included and I hope we richly benefit from this new opportunity.
