Young People's Concerts (YPC)

January 24-26, 2018 | CAnnon center of the perfroming arts

MSO's annual Young People's Concerts (YPC), a school-day musical experience at the Cannon Center, targets students in Grade 5 with six free performances. This concert program is supported by an integrated unit of classroom lesson plans available through the Shelby County Schools website. MSO is currently developing recorded pre-/post-concert ensemble visits for download in the classroom.

The 2018 Young People's Concert has been programmed in response to the city-wide MLK50 initiative, with musical selections references important statements by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Selections  include:

Bernstein - Candide Overture

W. G. Still - Wood Notes 2

Amy Beach - Symphony in E Minor/2

Bartok - Rumanian Folk Dances

Stravinsky - Shrovetide Fair from Petrushka

Prokofiev - March from Love for Three Oranges

Shostakovich Symphony No. 9

To complete the program, MSO is inviting middle and high school students to submit original works in response to MLK50, through a structured, adjudicated competition.  One winner will be selected and their winning piece will be preformed.  Information about the composition competition will be circulated to school teachers in the near future.
