Memphis Composers Institute Spotlight

“Stranger of Kin” (2024), a work by composer, artist, and engineer Sina Karachiani, explores the complex emotions surrounding a loved one's struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Inspired by Karachiani's grandmother, the piece unfolds in a cyclical manner, mirroring the disorienting nature of memory loss and the emotional toll it takes on everyone involved.

“Stranger of Kin” was premiered in February 2025 by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kyle Dickson at Harris Hall. This premiere was part of the inaugural Memphis Composers Institute, a collaboration between the MSO, The Walden School, and the University of Memphis. Other works premiered during the event included "star / ghost / mouth / sea" by Soomin Kim, "Oobleck" by Evan Erickson, and "Extended Play," a viola concerto by D. J. Sparr, featuring soloist Kimberly Sparr.
