This concert features Copland’s Lincoln Portrait with a special guest narrator, and the world premiere of a new Requiem chronicling the US Armed Forces in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1975, and commemorating the 75th anniversary of the sacrifice of Navy Officer and aviator, Jesse L. Brown. This project was envisioned by Fred Smith and is dedicated in his memory to his fellow service men and women.

Memphis Composer Institute Concert

The Memphis Composers Institute, a partnership between The Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music of the University of Memphis, and The Walden School, announces the results of its call for orchestra scores. Selected composers and works include Dede Ondishko (Singing Strength), Fulya Kapucugil (Leaving the Nest), and Ethan Soledad (Cages of Jade); the concert will also feature the world premiere of Curtains of Light by Walden faculty member Caroline Mallonee.
The Memphis Composers Institute celebrates composers in the early stages of their orchestral composing careers by offering a chance to have a work performed by the Memphis Symphony. The selected composers will attend a two-day event, February 3-4, 2026, including rehearsals, panel discussions, and a performance of their works by the Memphis Symphony conducted by Kyle Dickson on February 4 at Harris Hall.
