THE MUSICIAN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

A big, bold vision was set in place by the Circle of Friends of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra

– to become an instrument of intentional inclusion through the performing arts -

Over time, the Circle of Friends efforts have helped bring vibrancy to the MSO by ushering inclusivity into the audience and patron base as well as adding financial sustainability. The members’ determination was unwavering and resulted in diversity being embedded throughout the fabric of the organization. The mission, however, was not yet finished. Ultimately seven of Circle’s former chairs became the Trustees to guide the completion of their initiative’s vision to address the demographic makeup of the orchestra itself. Simultaneously the Music Director, the board, core musicians and the executive leadership embraced equity, diversity, inclusion as core organizational values. In order for the Memphis Symphony Orchestra to be truly recognized as the community’s symphony, they all knew it must authentically reflect the citizens it serves.

The Circle initiated a plan for the next stage of its mission and created THE MUSICIAN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.

The MSO Fellowship Program is a springboard opened to emerging string musicians of color who seek a career as a core player in a major regional/national orchestra or as a teaching artist.

Candidates must have at least a baccalaureate degree from a music program of a higher education institution or conservatory within the last three years.

The two-year appointment in the string section will serve as a welcomed opportunity of experimental learning in all aspects of a professional orchestra as well as the chance to explore how an inclusivity mission can fit into all components of an arts institution.

As the Fellows seek permanent career opportunities, they carry the story of being part of a committed teaching orchestra that serves the entire community through classical and modern performances, community engagement events, and music education.
